Tasting a Mexican Dessert!

Mrs. Cockrell's class read a story about
Mexican life. So as a treat to the class she
prepared sophillas. Sophillas are a Mexican
dessert that consist of frying a soft tortilla.
After is has been fried sprinkle both sides
with sifted powdered sugar and spread the
top with honey.  Yummy!

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - This summer,
WDAM-TV will begin airing a new half-hour,
weekly television show showcasing the music
and musicians of the Pine Belt.

Starting June 27 at 10:30 p.m., "The Green
Couch Sessions" will feature full recordings of
live performances by local musicians mixed with
interview segments - each week, a new half-hour
with a new artist.  Filmed at local venues with
seven high-definition cameras simultaneously,
the producers of the show wanted to give artists
in the Pine Belt area of Mississippi a safe,
conformable place to showcase their talent and
give viewers a chance to see raw performances
delivered as if they were inches away from the
musicians. "WDAM has a long tradition of music
programs beginning back in the '50s," said Pam
McGovern, head of production at WDAM. "We
are proud to be a part of the same community
from which these bands come from, and we
wanted to give them a way to reach a wider
audience."  Producers David McRaney and Brad
Clark said the crew came up with the idea for the
show after watching old tapes from the WDAM
archive.  "We were going through old
commercials and television shows from the early
days of the station," said David McRaney,
director of new media at WDAM, "Back then,
there were no syndicated shows like 'Judge
Judy' or 'Wheel of Fortune;' they had to fill up all
that extra air time with shows they made
themselves. They had a local wrestling show,
game shows and variety shows and music shows
all made in-house."  Brad Clark, the director of
the show and part of the production staff at
WDAM, said watching the old shows got them
brainstorming.  "We thought, 'Why doesn't
WDAM do their own shows anymore?'" said
Clark. "So, we started sitting on and around the
old green couch in the production office and laid
out the blueprints for the kind of show we
wanted to make."  Those green couch sessions
resulted in the show they went out and filmed
over the next year.  "We wanted to create
something made by the community, about the
community, for the community," added McRaney.
Right away, the producers reached out to The
University of Southern Mississippi, The
Downtown Hattiesburg Association and a
handful of venues in the area. They then
secured the services of Rec Room Recording to
capture high-quality audio. Everyone they
approached with the idea for a local music show
agreed to help.  A.J. Reynolds, Mike McCarty,
Michael Perry, Ryan Royals and Mik Davis
rounded out the crew. They began filming bands
and posting the videos to their website.  "Bands
started contacting us in droves once they saw
the quality of what we were doing on the
Internet," said McGovern. "This was an idea we
had been considering for years, but it took all
the right people coming together at the right
time to get it made. Now, we see with all the
support we are getting that there is a real desire
in the community for something like this to be on
TV."  The first season of "The Green Couch
Sessions" will last 10 episodes, and if it proves
successful the producers hope to continue the
show for years to come.
